What is the Internet?

The Internet is a global network of computers that communicate by sending and receiving information.

There are two main name spaces in the Internet:

  1. Internet Protocol (IP) Addresses: Unique identifiers for computers on the network.
  2. Domain Name System (DNS): A system that translates human-readable domain names into IP addresses.

Both IP addresses and DNS are managed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
