What is a top-level domain (TLD)?

A Top-Level Domain (TLD) is the part of a domain name that appears after the dot. For example, in "example.com," the .com is the TLD.

Types of TLDs

  1. Generic TLDs (gTLDs):
These include popular extensions like .COM, .NET, and .ORG. Generic TLDs are open for registration by anyone.
  2. Country Code TLDs (ccTLDs):
These are specific to countries or regions, such as:
    • .US for the United States
    • .UK for the United Kingdom
    • .CA for Canada
    • .DE for Germany
Some ccTLDs are restricted to residents of the country, while others are open globally. For example, .ME (Montenegro) is popular for personal websites, and .CO (Colombia) is marketed as an alternative to .COM.
  3. Sponsored TLDs (sTLDs):
These are specialized domains managed by a sponsor for a specific group or purpose. For instance, .XXX is a sponsored TLD for adult content.
  4. Geographic TLDs (geoTLDs):
These TLDs are designed for cities or regions, such as .NYC (New York City), .TOKYO, and .ASIA.
  5. New TLDs:
Since 2014, many new TLDs have been introduced, providing creative options like .BLOG, .SHOP, and .TECH.
